The problem with music streaming today
Today's streaming landscape favors scale over substance, pushing the same tracks to millions while independent artists fight harder than ever to be seen, heard, and paid.
Most services are driven by algorithmic feeds and pro-rata payout models built for scale, not sustainability. A handful of viral tracks are pushed everywhere, while independent artists compete inside systems they don't control and can't see. For listeners, discovery becomes passive and repetitive. For artists, earnings are unpredictable and disconnected from real fan support. Research backs the pattern: in 2025, 88% of tracks available on streaming services were played fewer than 1,000 times [1], and under pro-rata the heaviest streamers steer a large share of everyone's royalties [2].
